280 bellies fed at Waste Food Wedding!

Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue…these are the things a bride needs on her wedding day. But what about being green? Would you feed food that would have otherwise been wasted to your guests?

Thats exactly what Joe and Kayley Tilston did on their wedding day – for 280 people yesterday at the beautiful Victoria Hall, Saltaire! At The Real Junk Food Project Zelig Catering, we are so proud to say we filled 280 bellies with only intercepted “food waste”, and surprised the guests with a big reveal! Everything you see here wouldn’t have otherwise made it to a plate because of huge problems with our food systems. Doing it in a Grade II listed building just made it all the more fitting, to show the beauty of the food exactly for what it is: a valuable resource we all need to treasure not rubbish fit for the bin.

You might think wow that’s a heavy subject for a wedding, it’s meant to be all about the happy couple and having a good knees up?! Well it absolutely was. The Father of the Bride said it was amazing and he was so impressed with our efforts, he went back up for more. Everyones kindness about our work after they tasted the food was amazing and they couldn’t believe the standard of the menu:
Canapes of gazpacho, more meats and types of cheese than you could shake a bouquet at and a BBQ of chicken, ribs, ox, sea bream and so much more. Vegans, gluten free, vegetarians and allergies all catered for.

It certainly wasn’t perfect. The gas had gone in our van, so we didn’t have a refrigerated vehicle, meaning we had to transport everything that needed to stay cold extremely last minute to the venue. Definitely not ideal. However, when you’re working with “food waste”, things have a tendency to be…slightly unpredictable! But we wouldn’t change it for the world. Because we know we NEED to change it FOR our world!

Thank you to our volunteer team – Hannah, Hazel, Hazel and Rachel absolute troopers making it happen and smiling the entire day. Of course Ben from Bear Kitchen, thank you once again for the use of our facilities and your expertise with preparation and the BBQ. You go above and beyond and deliver every single time, thank you.

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Tilston for their beautiful day that we were so honoured and grateful to be a part of to feed bellies not bins. Thank you for your kindness.

Lets REALLY feed the world!
