WHO IS “FOOD WASTE” GOOD FOR? ABSOLUTELY EVERYONEPosted by Rachel Trafford 28 Jun 2019
A question we get asked a lot is “can I come and shop with you, I’m not on benefits?” Or “what proof do I need to bring with me to get food?”. In reality, you don’t need anything. At The Real Junk Food Project, we believe in creating a sustainable food system and circular economy, that champions equal access.
WE ARE NOT A FOOD BANK. WE ARE A FOOD MOVEMENT.
The Real Junk Food Project and the Kindness Sharehouse is not a food bank. Anyone is welcome and we do not work on a referral basis. Above all, our work is about stopping food waste and helping the planet. Treating people as human beings, not an income status is empowering and inclusive. Pay As You Feel puts the power and choice back into the hands of the individual, to access nutritional foods and make a difference to the environment.
The food that we intercept, is not “waste” that other people do not want or only cast off tins suitable for a hand-out. Waste can be a misleading term, that makes people think it is material that is no longer useful or required. Above all, it’s a whole food source in itself of perfectly edible and valuable product, whose careless misuse is a criminal waste of the land, labour, water and energy used to produce it.
“WHO IS IT GOOD FOR?” ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE.
The idea that people who choose us as their source of food are doing it for one reason alone or are from one “group” is wrong. People come to us who have the means to shop elsewhere, but are horrified by the environmental impact of food waste. Similarly, people come to us who may benefit from the money we can save them and the ability to feed their family fresh produce, who may otherwise have struggled. People certainly can get much more food for Pay As You Feel. However, they are not mutually exclusive. Engaging in the environmental issue and wanting to tackle it is not exclusively for people of a certain economic status. A person’s ability to make that choice shouldn’t be decided by background.
KINDNESS SHAREHOUSE RULES
– TAKE WHAT YOU NEED
– PAY AS YOU FEEL
– BE KIND TO OTHERS
It really is as simple as that.
Food at the Sharehouse differs depending on interceptions which will likely differ each time you come. This in turn promotes kindness: sharing ideas as well as food to be as creative as possible!
Come and see us and help us REALLY feed the world and share if you want to see the conversation changing. We’d love to hear your thoughts 💚
