Weekend meals now on menu at The Real Junk Food ProjectPosted by Joe Quigley-Jones 12 Apr 2019
A cafe that uses up donated food that would have gone to waste and sells it on a “pay as you feel” basis is extending its opening times.
The Real Junk Food Project Café, at the LCiL West End Neighbourhood Centre in the city’s West End, is now openevery Saturday from 11am to 3pm.
The café already operates on Thursdays from 7pm to 8.30pm and on Fridays from 11am to 3pm.
The launch day featured freshly made food, live music and entertainment for children, such as building robots out of cardboard boxes.
Bobby Hawkins, co- director of The Real Junk Food Project, said that the café is opening three days a week because they are now receiving more food than they can distribute in just two days.
He said: “One thing about opening up on Saturdays as well is that it shows how much food waste there is.
“The reason we wanted to do it on Saturdays is because, at the moment, we are missing out on those working families who are too tired to come out on Thursday evenings or are busy working all day Friday.
“We had a trial run a few weeks ago and didn’t really publicise it at all, but it was heaving. People were saying to us that we should do it each week, so we’re catering to that.”
The café was previously held at the Adult Education Centre on Belvoir Street, however, it moved to the LCiL centre in August last year.
Bobby said that all community groups in the area are welcome to go to the café on Saturdays and either promote what they do to the café’s customers, stage events there or hold meetings.
He said: “Anyone is welcome. As it’s a payasyoufeel café, people can pay however they want.
“One thing we find very difficult is the packing down of the café after everyone’s gone. So if people want to come down but don’t have any money they can pay for their meal by helping us clear up, which would be a massive help.
“The donations we do receive help to keep the wheels go round. “We’re over the moon about opening up on Saturdays. It’s been a long time coming but now is the right time to do this, and all the support we’ve received so far has been absolutely magic.”
